The photograph was taken on East Erie Street in Painesville, Ohio, as part of the Bicentennial wagon train. The image was submitted by photographer Hilda Sillanpa of Painesville, Ohio, in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: Dated 1936, this photograph shows Frozen Cascade Falls in Depression Era Painesville, Ohio. A note on the reverse reads "Elevation is 238 meters (780 ft); Soil stratification is evident on left; Photo taken 1936." This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This color images shows the entrance to the Mathews House, a historic building now located on the campus of Lake Erie College, Painesville, Ohio. Three steps lead to the front door, which is framed by two side lights and topped by a fanlight with ornamentation (difficult to see in this image). The famed master architect and builder Jonathan Goldsmith (1783-1847) designed and built this well-proportioned Greek Revival residence for Dr. John H. Mathews (1785-1862), the first physician in Painesville, Ohio. The house also served as the first hospital in that community. It is considered to be one of the finest Goldsmith houses. The house was moved to its present location on the campus of Lake Erie College from its original North State Street site in 1949. Lake Erie College is on the National Register of Historic Places. Dr. John Henry Mathews married Martha Devotion Huntington, daughter of Samuel H. Huntington, third governor of Ohio. According to the Western Reserved Historical Society, Dr. Mathews was an abolitionist and suspected member of the Underground Railroad. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a nitrate photograph showing the Lewis Morley House, located at 231 N. State Street in Painesville, Ohio. Built in 1836 by prominent architect Jonathan Goldsmith, the home was restored in 2001. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. Goldsmith (1783-1847) is known for his late Federal and early Greek Revival architecture elsewhere in Lake County and the Cleveland area, though this is the last of his homes still standing in this neighborhood. Many of his architectural drawings and papers are housed at the Western Reserve Historical Society. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Taken by photographer Ihna Thayer Frary in 1924, this photograph shows the doorway to an unidentified house in Painesville, Ohio. The doorway is flanked by wooden columns and features a decorative transom. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1873, Ihna Thayer Frary was a prominent American art and architecture scholar, whose primary interest was the architectural heritage of the region of northeastern Ohio known as the Western Reserve. In addition to serving as publicity and membership secretary of the Cleveland Museum of Art, he was a professor of Ohio and American architecture at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University’s School of Architecture. Over the course of his career, Frary was a design consultant for private clients and designed furniture, and was an active member of several prominent arts councils in the Cleveland area. In 1963, Frary and his two sons donated his entire photographic collection to the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection). The Ihna Thayer Frary Collection consists of 4,000 5 x 7 photographs of private residences, churches, taverns, and public buildings, as well as select rural buildings, bridges, archaeological sites, and public monuments. Description: Photograph showing the South Newbury Union Chapel, a noted site in suffrage history where a small group of women illegally cast ballots in a local election in 1871, becoming the first female voters in Ohio's history. The chapel was originally constructed in 1858 after future president James A. Garfield, then a teacher at Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, was denied permission to speak at a nearby Congregational Church due to potentially controversial subject matter. The Women’s Suffrage and Political Club would be organized at the chapel in 1874--the second such organization in Ohio and one of the earliest in the country--and it was also used as a speaking venue for suffrage activists including Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, Ellen Munn and Harriet Taylor Upton. This item comes from the Frances Jennings Casement Papers, a manuscript collection comprised of letters and association records related to the founding and leadership of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association. Casement (1840-1928) was born in Painesville, Ohio, and graduated from Painesville Academy and Willoughby Female Seminary. Her father, Charles Casement, supported abolition and women's suffrage and encouraged Frances to be active in social causes. Frances Casement established the Painesville Equal Rights Association in 1883, and shortly after became involved in the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association, serving as its president from 1885 to 1888. Painesville, the county seat, was incorporated in 1832 and named after General Edward Paine (1746–1841), one of the early settlers of the Western Reserve, who settled in the area around 1800 and represented the region in the territorial legislature. Paine had served as a captain in the Connecticut militia during the American Revolutionary War. When the plat of land was laid in 1805 its original name was Champion after General Henry Champion.
